Cradle Cap (Seborrheic Dermatitis) in Newborns

Assoc. Dr. Gökhan DAVUTOĞLU · Specialist in Pediatrics, Ümraniye Istanbul

Cradle cap (seborrheic dermatitis) is a common, benign skin condition in newborns and young infants, characterized by yellowish, greasy, scaly patches on the scalp. It can also affect the eyebrows, behind the ears, and in skin creases. It is not contagious and does not cause the baby discomfort.

Cause: Thought to be related to overactive sebaceous (oil) glands stimulated by maternal hormones transferred during pregnancy, combined with the presence of Malassezia yeast on the skin. It is not caused by poor hygiene.

Natural course: Usually appears in the first weeks of life and resolves spontaneously within 6–12 months in most cases. Some children may have recurrences in adolescence.

Home management: Gentle scalp massage with baby oil or mineral oil, left on for 15–20 minutes, then washed out with gentle baby shampoo. Use a soft brush to gently loosen scales. Wash the scalp daily during active phases. Do not forcibly pick off scales.

When to see a doctor: Scales spreading beyond the scalp to the face or body, red inflamed skin, signs of secondary infection (oozing, crusting, odor), or no improvement with home treatment. Your pediatrician may recommend low-potency topical steroid or antifungal cream for persistent or widespread cases.
